Western way bike route.gif

A new shared use bike path has been completed alongside Western Way and around Exe Bridges roundabout in Exeter (shown in blue on the adjacent map).

The path starts from the roundabout at the junction with South Street and runs down past West Street, and the House that Moved, to the Exe Bridges roundabout where a new Pelican crossing allows you to cross Bonhay Road.

This provides a link to the cycle path alongside Bonhay Road to the Station and also a link into Cowick Street and St Thomas via the new shared use path around Exe Bridges roundabout.

Sustrans' Connect 2 Funds Bring Forward Fisher's Mill Bridge

Two years' ago Sustrans won a large chunk of lottery funding to take foward a series of Connect2 schemes around the country.

Two of the funded schemes are in Devon. One will link Newton Abbot and Kingsteignton via the Racecourse and the other will provide a safe route to King's School and the Hospital in Ottery St Mary.

The good news is that funding has now been made available to bring forward work on the Fisher's Bridge link just outside Topsham. This will provide a safe route around the narrow River Clyst Bridge. Work has started with completion scheduled for Autumn 2011.

Redhayes Bridge over M5

The new Redhayes Bridge was lifted into place in February. The bridge is substantially complete, but construction work in the adjacent Science Park is likely to delay opening until at least July.

The bridge (shown in pink on the map) will connect Gypsy Hill Lane (alongside the Gypsy Hill Hotel off Pinn Lane) to Blackhorse Lane and Honiton Road to the east of the motorway immediately north of Junction 29.

Work is planned to extend cycle routes to the east, including an off-road route to the Airport that is programmed for completion by the autumn.

M5 Junction 29

Work is about to start on changes to Junction 29. If you have any problems with disruption to the cycle path alongside the A30 please contact Devon County Council.

Old Rydon Lane

The closure of the popular commuter route up Old Rydon Lane was due to be lifted on 9 April, but this date keeps slipping.

It links the Rydon Lane Retail Park and Digby & Sowton directly with the Newcourt developments south of the dual carriageway.

The bridge will be opened shortly when the new link road to Old Rydon Lane is complete.

Bluebell Ride

Woodhouse Hill (c) Alistair Cope

Alistair Cope, Chairman of Axe Valley Pedallers reports:-

Axe Valley Pedallers enjoyed their traditional annual ride with their good friends from Exeter Cycle Touring Club, as they cycled as many lanes as they could find bedecked with Bluebells. The ride, known as Bondie’s Beautiful Bluebell Ride was led by Simon Bondie Hayward of Axe Valley Pedallers. The relaxed route made its way from Seaton Tram Station, along the Axe Estuary, through the back lanes to Musbury and then up to the Great Trill Plantation.

The Bluebells were rather passed their best this year, as they had flowered a tad early in all the glorious spring sunshine. However as the group made its way down to Yawl, an enforced stop to fix a puncture was well placed to take in the last remaining flowers. Lyme Regis was as usual for this ride, the group’s destination and a long and lingering break for tea and cake was enjoyed before returning to Seaton.
