Leisure Ride Exeter to Woodbury - Cream Tea Event

Saturday 30th August 2008 2:30 pm

Cathy Civill of the Guild of Devonshire Ringers wrote: The timely advertisement in The Highwayman attracted 18 cyclists to the bell ringers fundraising cream tea in Woodbury. I should like to thank them for their support. £185 was raised for the Devon Church Bell Restoration Fund.

Extract from Exmouth Journal's report on the ride

They were all invited to join the ringers in the church tower and, 12 including Mike, Liz, Harold and Helen, made their way up a very challenging stone spiral staircase to the ringing room to see ringers at work. Perhaps the most enduring memory, for those who leant against a wall, will be the feeling of the tower swaying with the forces created by the swinging bells. Some visitors also took up the invitation to climb even higher to the belfry to watch the bells in motion. As she came back down, Maggie Bead was heard to declare 'That's the bravest thing I’ve ever done'.

The ride out from Exeter Quay to Woodbury for this event was organised in response to a request from the County Council's Cycle Training Officer to provide a short ride for their inexperienced adult recruits. In this case the weather maybe worked against us, because none of them took up the opportunity offered by leaders Arthur, Roy and Kirby. Surely they couldn’t have found a better way of spending a fine afternoon?!

More information about bellringing in te area can be found at the Guild of Devonshire Ringers web site.

The Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC) in Devon organise a range of leisure rides in the Exeter Area. Details of each week’s rides are posted in Exeter Central Library and on our web site

On Saturday 30th August Arthur Civill from CTC Exeter will be leading a ride from Exeter's Quay to Woodbury for a Cream Tea in support of the Devon Church Bell Restoration Fund. The cost of the tea will be £3 but the ride is free. Participants will have the chance to see bell-ringers in action.

The ride will follow the canal-side path to Countess Wear, then the off-road route to Topsham. From Topsham we will ride on-road past Dart's Farm to Ebford and then along the back lanes to Woodbury for tea. The return journey will pass through Woodbury Salterton and Clyst St Mary. The distance each way is 8 miles and takes about 1 hour.

Interested riders should assemble outside Saddles and Paddles on the Quay for a 2:30 pm start. If you wish to join the ride please let Cathy Civill know by email or phone 01395 266836 so that we have an idea of numbers.

Cathy Civill writes:

"My Sunday rides with the CTC normally begin at the eleven o'clock coffee stop. In case you may think I'm just a late riser, I have often explained that this is to allow me to take part in the service ringing at my local church and I feel many of you have then taken a genuine interest in this other hobby of mine.

Why not come and enjoy a cream tea and if you would like to visit a ringing chamber and see the bells in action, the tower in Woodbury will be open. You will be made very welcome.

Arthur is organising a ride on the day, starting at Exeter Quay at 2.30pm to Woodbury and return."
