Coyton, Whitchurch Canonicorum, Forde Abbey

Ride Report: Sunday 23rd May 2010 - Judy & Tim Green

Dinosaur waiting to pick up crumbs at the cafe

It was a glorious day with not a cloud in the sky and temperatures in the upper 20's when 6 riders set off from Yarcombe layby on the Chard main road. Kirby, Jill, Judy & Tim were joined by Geoff and Penny who arrived in their convertible with the roof down and after a quick reccie of the route we set off down the Yarty valley, speeding past bluebells & hedges full of wild flowers. We soon found ourselves in what appeared to be a farmyard but no, we were'nt lost already but Moxhayes farmyard had almost taken over the narrow lane. Shortly after, our route was barred by a large herd of Friesans and one in particular fighting to return against the flow. Soon all was explained when back she came, having been re-united with her little calf,

Outside the old Allhallows School

Morning tea was enjoyed at the Tramway cafe, Colyton and Geoff seemed very focussed on the subject of sheep ticks but none were found and neither was there any excessive scratching noticed !

After crossing the Axe and taking the busy Seaton main road for a short distance we soon took a left turn and headed up the hills towards Rousdon and thanks to Kirby's assurance that 'Private road' did not apply to cyclists , we soon found ourselves passing through the old Allhallows School estate.

We continued along the ridge towards Raymond's Hill with stunning views across the Axe valley and having crossed the A30 were soon whizzing down deserted lanes, dodging pot holes and cow pats to Whitchurch Canonicorum and lunch in the churchyard.

Whitchurch Canonicorum

Geoff spotted what appeared to be a clear snail's trail right up the 80ft Church tower but there were no takers to verify this by shinning up for a closer look. The church has interesting gargoyles and was once an important centre for pilgrims although it was'nt made cl;ear if any arrived on two wheels.

Shortly after, we bumped into Ted & Susan who had just emerged from the pub with the Tandem club riders and under interrogation they admitted that they were'nt sure if they were involved with a serious Sunday ride !

Kirby ignoring the whisteria

We had an enjoyable afternoon tea at Forde Abbey and managed to escape without being charged for entrance to the gardens, before starting a longish climb up to Holy City and the ridge above Axminster. At one point we momentarily lost Kirby but he soon emerged and was seen to swerve almost into the hedge - presumably following his sat-nav - but shortly after he came to the leader's rescue as the said machine correctly informed us we had missed the Southay turn-off !

Soon we were heading down the final descent to Yarcombe and our cars - a ride of about 50 miles. Thanks to all who came for good company and an enjoyable day.
