Joint Ride with CTC Exeter to Hope Cove
Sunday 14th September 2008, Nicole Pethybridge
The day dawned clear and bright, a novelty this summer. Six welcome visitors from the Exeter Section joined the usual group at South Brent. This made 11 as Andy took us off towards Loddiswell. Many recognised the route from the Audax, the previous weekend, and last year’s treasure hunt.
An undulating route, taking in a newly lime-washed church tower in Diptford, took us to a welcome coffee at one of our favourite stops –The Avon Mill. Already tucking into coffee and cake were Harold and Robin. Everyone was entertained by Steve’s photos of his holiday. Not quite sure what the beachwear had to do with cycling research but then Steve has always taken a very individual approach!!!
Coffee at the Mill
The day was definitely turning out to be one of the best of the summer and we left the Avon Mill to head towards the sea. The company was delightful, the hills a little more challenging.
Arriving at Thurlestone
Lunch led to a difference of approach - whilst us softy South Hams ordered our lunch in the cafe the hardy Exeter bunch took to the beach with sandwiches. However the lunch stop did allow us time to take in the view and sample Salcombe ice cream so a success all round.
Enjoying the sunshine we headed back taking in the thrills of the ride down to Aveton Gifford and the slow climb up and down to finally reach the moor again. Bill & I enjoyed the route and the company so much we detoured back through South Brent where we said goodbye to our visitors. Thanks to all for a lovely day, route and company!
