CTC Exeter Cycling / Camping Weekend
Friday 18th to Sunday 20th July 2014
There will be a cycling/camping weekend based on a campsite next to Salisbury Race Course from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th July. Both on-road and off-road routes will be available.
Evening meals can be taken in the Fox & Goose Inn in Coombe Bissett about 1.5 miles away. The campsite is about 90 miles from Exeter and (with reasonable traffic) the journey takes just under 2 hours. Information has been circulated to those who have previously attended such weekends, but if anyone knows of other likely takers please let me know.
The camp site is called Coombe Caravan Park at Grid Ref 097 284 on Map sheet 184 Salisbury. It is adjacent to the Race Course but separate with its own drive. The address is
Coombe Nurseries Race Plain Netherhampton Salisbury SP2 8PN tel: 01722 328 451 web: www.coombecaravanpark.co.uk email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Attempts to gain a reduction in camp site fees were only moderately successful with the charge at £15 per night per tent for two people. Hook ups cost an extra £2. Mention Exeter Cycling Club when you book in which will also make sure our tents are located together.
The Fox & Goose Inn is on the main road in Coombe Bissett Grid sq 1126. The menu and facilities are promising and participants will be asked in early July to choose their Friday evening meal from a circulated menu. Saturday’s choice can be made during Friday’s meal. For those interested the web site is at www.foxandgoose-coombebissett.co.uk Tel: 01722 718437. The proprietor is Keith Smith. The route to the pub from the camp site starts along the ridgeway track which has been badly mauled by 4 wheel drive vehicles. But after a short distance there is a proper metalled road down to Coombe Bissett.
Two B&B facilities in Coombe Bissett have been visited. The Brook House 01722 718 242 at www.BrookHouseSalisbury.com has one double bed room left at £85 per night. The Evening Hill B&B 01722 718 561 at www.eveninghill.com has more than one room for single or double at about £40 per person per night. A search on the Internet may reveal further options in the general area.
When you have made your booking please let me know whether you will be tenting, caravanning or staying locally. It also helps to know whether you plan to cycle “on” or “off” road (or both) for planning purposes. As is previous years the plan is to leave the campsite for our respective rides at 09:30 each day and start our evening meal circa 7 pm. I have yet to make arrangements for use of the camp site facilities after the ride on Sunday.

Looking forward to the weekend.
