Sunday 28th April 2013 Middling Ride
This weekend was the first official running of the Chris Bennett 300k Memorial Audax, plus the 100k Merry Monk, so numbers were depleted at ‘Kerswell Arch this Sunday, still there were 15 of us at one of my favourite cafes, by the Steam Railway in Totnes.
“Who wants to go on to Blackawton?” only Mike Taylor and Maurice. I’m a bit predictable, so up onto the Avonwick Road to Hazard, down towards Harbertonford, about half way down they had been surface dressing, and the amount of loose chippings left made riding with slick tyres “interesting”, this continued after we turned for Rollister Bridge, but left us to our usual potholes etc. on the climb to Crabbodon Cross.
Mostly down hill from here, until the last climb into Blackawton, where we were glad to sit by the Memorial to eat our snacks, it wasn’t that warm, so it was an easy decision to make our way to the café at Dartmouth Castle for coffee and cake. Maurice had been worrying all day about the climb from the ferry to Hillhead, at the top he realised he had conquered far worse earlier in the day, his initiation to the South Hams.
