Sunday 7th April 2013 Hard Ride
Report by Chris Whatley.
A group of six did this ride including my son Jon who was visiting.
We set off at a good pace through Newton Abbot and Teigngrace, passing Bickington and then following the Cycleway alongside the Plymouth road to Ashburton. Holne Hill is a challenge at any time but good progress was made and we reached Holne Community Cafe at 10.40am. James O'Neil met us at the cafe but also told us that it was not due to open for another 15 minutes.
Hearing this, that well known long distance Audax specialist Martin Reed suggested that we press on to Princetown. The weather was fine so it was a pleasure to ride the unfenced roads towards Vennford Resevoir until an unmistakable hissing from my front tyre revealed a puncture. This was easily repaired but as I was unable to find the cause of the puncture I was a bit uneasy as we rode down the steep fast hills in the Hexworthy area. No further puncture though so we soon reached Princetown Cafe for an early lunch.
As Martin wanted to get home in good time we turned right at Postbridge to follow the road through Bellever and Ponsworthy to Widecombe where we enjoyed the sandwiches we had not needed at Princetown. Preferring to use the Natworthy route out of Widecombe rather than climbing the notorious hill we were soon descending through Manaton and then on to Bovey Tracey and homeward to Newton Abbot and Torquay. A good ride enjoyed by all of us.
