CTC Torbay - Autumn 2010 Newsletter

by Geoff Sharpe

I feel that last Sunday with all that wind, flooding and heavy rain summer had come to an end and now we must all look forward to having to wear long fingered gloves, a extra layer on top and waterproof coats when we go out on our rides. Also, now that the clocks have changed you should fit lights on your bike if you're going out on the all day ride.

We have had a successful last few months with a very enjoyable weekend with Rob Swayne's weekend of cycling in Cheddar and I persuaded 43 of you to come over to Perros Guirec, in Brittany the other weekend. Still getting about 20 out on a Sunday morning for a ride to the coffee stop and 5/10 going on for the all day ride. This Sunday it's the CTC Devon AGM at Ashburton. Tea, coffee and cakes are being offered for free in the morning before the meeting.

New rides list will be sent out in the next week or two which will take us up to the middle of April so you can plan well ahead your Wednesday evening and Sunday rides .

The Annual General Meeting

For those of you who were there and can remember that far back, we have a new secretary and changes in the Wednesday evening rides plus an extra set of rides on a Tuesday.

Savannah Southcott, our new secretary says;-

I am very pleased to accept the role of club secretary. I hope I can perform the required duties efficiently and to the best of my ability. I will also do my utmost to enhance the profile of CTC Torbay.

Savannah can be contacted at southcott46@aol.co.uk.

Monday Morning Ladies Rides

Ursula is still riding out with a small group of lady riders to some of the local cafes on a Monday and would like to see or hear from a few more of the club's ladies. Meeting at 09.00 at Sainsbury's car park, Newton Abbot. Ursula can be contacted at ugibbings@btinternet.com.

Tuesday Morning Rides

Mike Taylor says...

The Tuesday Ride is now a CTC official ride. Any CTC member can turn up and join us, we meet at the Torquay Fire Station, every Tuesday at 09.00 for a morning ride.(Depart at 09.15) The first Tuesday in the month will be a full day ride, (weather permitting). If you are not a member of the CTC or wish to bring a friend along, you are allowed 3 rides with the club, then you would be expected to join.

Mike can be contacted at mike.bike@talktalk.net.

Wednesday Evening Rides

Slight change of format for the winter. On the first and last Wednesday of the month the ride will go to a pub in the Kingskerswell area so that you are only a short distance from the start. This is to try and encourage some new riders out on a Wednesday who have not been keen on riding back to home from the pub in the dark on their own. They can now drive to the arch and leave their car there for driving home later.

Chris is still the co-ordinator for the rides and can be contacted at t_chris_bennett@hotmail.com. Meet at 19.00 hours at Kingskerswell Arch for a 19.15 departure.

Final positions for the Wednesday night rides ABP points.

1 Tony Avery 26 points
2 Roger Wyman 24
3 Steve Main 18
4 John Beesley 16
Rod Pash 16
6 Gavin Fothergill 14
7 Anne Stewart 8
8 Dave Prudden 6
Lee Atkinson 6
Martin Read 6
Terry Venn 6

Sunday Day Rides

Chris Bennett is also the co-ordinator for these rides. We are offering a varied and mixed selection of rides every Sunday. Meeting at 09.00 at Kingskerswell Arch for a 09.15 departure. We have a few new ride leaders of late, Paul Harman, Clive Long and Chris Whatley so I hope you will make a point of joining them on their Sunday rides.

In the Sunday rides points competition, Mike Taylor said last year that the trophy was only out on loan and has topped the table by 11 points to repeat his 2007/08 win.

Final Positions...

1 Mike Taylor 66 points
2 John Beesley 55
3 Chris Bennett 52
Dave Prudden 52
5 Rob Swayne 48
Paul Harman 48
7 Brian Jago 35
8 John Cooper 34
Roger Wyman 34
10 Geoff Sharpe 33
11 Kevin Presland 31
12 Phil Ellis 28

How does the points table work ?

Phil tells me that if you are in good enough state after getting to the coffee stop on a Sunday and can still write your name correctly on the sheet going round, often a serviette, you will get 1 point and if you continue on to the ride destination an extra point is awarded making 2 points for the day.

On Wednesday evening rides 2 points are awarded for cycling to the pub. Write your name down when you arrive there as later on you may have trouble remembering what to write and a 'X' is not acceptable on the sheet.

The Sunday rides table starts on the first ride in October and ends at the end of the following September. Special CTC Devon rides also count in this competition .

Wednesday rides have two competitions. Winter rides (October till the end of March) and Summer rides, April to the end of September.

Phil will want the details of each ride as soon as possible after you get home. Phil can be contacted at hello@cloud456.com.

Well, I think I've said enough to encourge you to get out on your bike on Sunday and next week to go for a ride. Next Wednesday (10th) the evening ride is going to the Church House Inn at Marldon, there's plenty of room for you all in there and if you don't fancy cycling, you could always drive there to meet up for a pint and a chat.

Hope to see you on Sunday at the CTC Devon Annual General Meeting in Ashburton, remember there's free tea/coffee and cakes.

Geoff
