CTC Torbay - Spring 2011 Newsletter

by Geoff Sharpe

A few words from our Secretary;-

As usual we have had excellent attendance on the club rides. The recent warm weather has been lovely and encouraged more riders on the Sunday all day option.

Thank you to all new ride leaders for guiding us through scenic, interesting and at times, surprising terrain.

We are always happy to embrace new members into CTC Torbay club, and hope the warmer weather will have the desired effect and help to increase our numbers.

Well done to all club members who have successfully completed challenges and competitive rides so far this year, and good luck to all riders taking part in future events.

I wish you all safe and enjoyable summer of cycling

Savannah Southcott Secretary, CTC Torbay.

We have had a successful last few months.

Record numbers turned out on the recent Devon Dirt Off Road event in April, no fewer than 10 of you tackled the Audax up in Bishops Lydeard, all 124K of it and Arnie Read, Miles and myself are up in Bristol this weekend riding the South Glos. 100 event.

New rides lists were sent out a few weeks ago which cover rides up to the middle of September so you can plan your rides well ahead.

Monday Morning Ladies Rides

Ursula is still riding out on a Monday morning with a small group of ladies to the local cafes and would like to see or hear from a few more of the club’s ladies.

Meet at Sainsbury’s car park, Newton Abbot at 09.30.

Tuesday Morning Rides

Getting 12-18 coming out on a Tuesday for a morning ride to a local café and on the first Tuesday of each month we go for an all day ride, it was Blackdown Rings in the South Hams last Tuesday.

Next week 14 of us are off to France, spending 3 days down in Quimper and back on Saturday. Brian is taking a number of the Ladies section riders to Beer Hostel while we are away.

We meet up every Tuesday morning at 09.00 at Torquay Fire Station.

Wednesday Evening Rides

A few more turning out on a Wednesday evening now with the lighter evenings and the warmer weather but always would like to see a few more of you.

1 Roger Wyman 36 points
2 Rod Pash 26

3= Steve Main 24
5 Martin Read 20

Sunday Day Rides

2 Rob Swayne 36
3 Phil Ellis 35
4= Dave Prudden 30

CTC Torbay Cycling Jerseys

A total of 31 have been ordered, 9 long sleeve and 22 short sleeve tops. At the moment John Dodson is putting the final touches to the design and we hope to have delivery by the end of the month.

Delivery of all 31 will be made to my address and I will bring them all along to Kingskerswell on a Sunday morning, (date to be advised) for you to collect. Failing that you will have to contact me to arrange to collect from Ipplepen.

Future Audaxes

As mentioned, quite a few of you are coming out on Audax events. Several out on the Merry Monk and 10 members on the event out of Bishops Lydeard.

A list of events was sent out a few weeks ago listing those in May and June and I’ll get another list out in the next few weeks on local events in July and August.

Highwayman Magazine

Over the past few months the Tuesday riders have been cycling up to the Haldon Chalet café to meet up with a member of the Highwayman team to collect 18 copies to sell to members (12) and give to Graham (6) for advertising purposes.

Lately, there have been problems with this arrangement. The usual member from the Highwayman group can’t meet up with us and no one else seems to be prepared to bring them up from the Exeter side. The last batch had to be collected from Dunsford and the next issue involves me going up to Broadclyst to collect the batch.

We are trying to work something out with them so that we have 12 copies for you to purchase on a Tuesday, Friday or Sunday, otherwise you will have to take out a subscription to get future Highwayman magazines.

I will keep you informed as to how we get on in the future and find it strange that they don’t seem willing to get the copies to us, After all, I send them £15/£18 each month depending on the sales and it’s not like we’re not on commission or something, we make nothing out of it.

Well that’s about it, can’t think of much else to say. Sundays ride is to Fernworthy Reservoir with a coffee stop in Moretonhampstead lead by Rod Pash,. You’ll be able to see how there getting on with the new cycleway up there, I believe they have put in a couple of new bridges.

Wednesdays ride is to the Wild Goose pub at Coombe in Teignhead though I’m not sure how Martin Read is going to lead it as he’s coming to France with the Tuesday group next week, I‘m sure someone on the night will take over.

Next Newsletter will be published at the beginning of August when you will all be tanned and super fit after going on some of the weekends away and some of the Audaxes through the summer.

If any members have any ideas as to what we should organise in the future I would like to hear from them.

Any new places to ride to on a Sunday, Any pubs worth a visit on a Wednesday evening or ideas of weekends away.
