CTC Devon Treasure Hunt - 10am Saturday 21 May - Exeter Quay

Roy Russell

Ride Report

18 departed from Exeter Quay, including a tandem and a trailer. 11 made it to the Topsham Ferry with its new leaky boat and grumpy pilot. The remaining 7 took a wrong turn and managed to find a different ferry from Turf to Topsham.

The route made the most of the quieter roads and cycle tracks around Exeter and followed the new section of Exe Trail to Lympstone. It then followed some lanes that even local riders had never used before. Katherine from Ivybridge was so impressed with the flatness of the route that she says she wants to move here from the hilly South Hams.

Various cafes and pubs were visited along the 24 mile route before returning to Exeter. After a brief encounter with the Devon County Show traffic the riders followed some quiet roads and paths back to the Canal Basin.

The riders answered 20 questions along the route that almost everybody got right. Answers included dazzling, Mary Jane, CTC and Enfield.

At the finish Kirby had prepared 24 photos of views the route had passed, that the contestants had to place on a map. The easiest was the photo of Lympstone Post Office that everybody got right except for one person who thought it was in Exton. Two people couldn't place a photo of the colourful canoes next to the finish! The hardest was a photo of a sign at Swans Nest that was only recognised by a visitor from London.

The winner was Mike Booth. Full results will be available on the Events page shortly.

There is an entry fee of £4 - entries can only be accepted on the day. Registration will open at 09:30 and entrants are expected to set off between 10:00 and 10:30.

Family Treasure Hunt

7 mile route, mainly off-road. Answer questions en-route and a photo recognition quiz at the end. Certificates to all finishers.

Vernon Deith Memorial Treasure Hunt

This is an annual event for the Vernon Deith Trophy.

The route follows the Exe Estuary and climbs to Woodbury, before returning to Exeter. It is relatively flat (for Devon!) - but you will encounter a couple of ascents. Most of the course is along quiet unclassified roads and the Exe Estuary Trail.

The route passes numerous shops, cafes and pubs - so there is plenty of choice for refreshment.

The Treasure Hunt is not a race - you are advised to take your time and explore places of interest on the way. You are expected to finish between 14:30 and 15:30. If you arrive before 14:30 there is no guarantee that anyone will be there!

This year the route is 38km (24 miles). Questions to be answered en-route. 2 points will be awarded for each correct answer (1 for a partially correct answer). Photo recognition questions will be asked at the finish (1 point for each correct answer).

You are expected to finish before 15:30 and to have completed the photo recognition questions by 16:00. If completed event sheets are handed in after 16:00 there will be 1 point deducted for each 5 minutes they are late.

Points Distribution
Points Available Questions en-route Photo Recognition Total
Main Route 38 km (24 mile) 40 24 64
Family Route 11 km (7 mile) 20 10 30

Reports on previous years' rides are available on-line.
