Redhayes Bridge opens
The new £3.75 million Redhayes Bridge over the M5 has been officially opened by Transport Minister Norman Baker.
At the opening Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council cabinet member for highways and transportation, said:
A lot of attention has gone into the architectural features of the bridge to ensure it stands out as a landmark, and we're proud to be able to show the Minister this striking new structure and how it connects Exeter to the wider economic developments on the outskirts of the city. The foundations of the Exeter and East Devon Growth Point are really starting to take shape and Redhayes Bridge is a key part of that. This is not just because it's the first section of infrastructure to be completed, but because of the important link it provides to encourage people to walk and cycle.
The bridge connects Gypsy Hill Lane to Blackhorse Lane immediately north of Junction 29. It reinstates an ancient route broken when the M5 was built. Devon County Council are developing a cycle route across the bridge from the city to the new Science Park and Cranbrook.
The bridge also provides an alternative to crossing Junction 29 of the M5, which is being remodelled in a £12 million scheme that includes a cycle route with 9 consecutive Toucan crossings.
Transport Minister Norman Baker was criticized earlier this year for cycling without a helmet. He replied that it was his libertarian right not to wear a helmet when cycling and was supported by the CTC.
Sustrans' Connect 2 Bridge update
Two Connect2 funded schemes are under construction in Devon.
Foundation work is underway on Fisher's Bridge just outside Topsham. The bridge spans are expected to be lifted into place in early September with completion in October. This will provide a safe route around the narrow River Clyst Bridge.
The new bridge over the Otter was erected last week. This is expected to be open by the end of August and will provide a safe route to King's School and the Hospital in Ottery St Mary.
A third Connect2 funded scheme was granted planning permission in March. This is the proposed link from
Newton Abbot to Kingsteignton via the Racecourse.
Darts Farm bike hire
Darts Farm, just outside Topsham (and ideally placed for the Exe Estuary Trail), are opening a bicycle hire facility on Thursday 21 July. Unusually they are hiring out Pashley bikes.
More details are available on their web site.
Old Rydon Lane
The closure of the popular commuter route up Old Rydon Lane was due to be lifted on 9 April, but this date keeps slipping. It is proposed to re-open this route at the same time as the new link road towards Tesco, including the new bridge over the Sandygate Link dual carriageway.
Events
(A Small Bit of) The Great Tour Audax - Sunday 31st July 2011
CTC Exeter and the Axe Valley Peddalers are organising two new Audax rides on Sunday 31st July.
Both rides start and finish in Seaton and take in the (rather hilly) coastal road between Otterton and Seaton. The 100 km ride includes around 2,000 metres of climbing (Mt Ventoux is only 1,912 metres high!!). You can find out how to enter on-line.
End to End charity ride - Thursday 4th August 2011
Join Guy Eatherington in Exeter on a leg of his eight day cycle ride from John O’Groats to Lands End. He is raising money for two charities, supporting both ends of life – Vranch House, who provide an excellent learning environment at the start of life, and Alzheimer’s Society, providing support and research to fight dementia.
Meet at 08.00 at Pluss Head Office on Thursday 4th August to join him on the penultimate day.
Exmouth Exodus - Saturday 13th August 2011
The Exmouth Exodus is a free to enter, semi-organised ride from Bristol to Exmouth. You can just turn up on the night and ride. We leave at 10pm and arrive, erm, sometime in the morning. It's about 100 miles and further details are available here.
Tour of Britain in Devon - Thursday 15th September 2011
Details have been released of Stage 5 of the Tour of Britain. The stage will start in Exeter and finish in Exmouth. It will cover more than 110 miles (180 km), with King of the Mountains climbs at Haytor, Coffin Stone, and Huccaby Tor, as well as three intermediate Sprints at Cheriton Bishop, Crediton and Rockbeare.
