CTC Torbay - Summer 2011 Newsletter
by Geoff Sharpe
Been some goings and comings in the club during the last few weeks.
The goings is that our secretary, Savannah Southcott suddenly resigned at the beginning of July just before one of our dates meeting so a few of the committee had to get together to clear up some outstanding matters.
The comings is that at short notice Paul Harman agreed to take over the secretaries job until the Annual General Meeting in October so all things are running smoothly again.
Thanks Paul for stepping in at very short notice to help us out.
CTC Torbay Cycling Jerseys
We sold 31 in the first batch to members and at the moment are getting another order together to go off next week.
If you want one of the jerseys or a second one say for the winter cycling you have got to contact Mike Taylor by this Sunday latest with the order form and cheque. If you’re not sure of your size come to the start on Sunday and maybe we can convince one of the lady members to see how you measure up.
This is the last chance to get a jersey, we will not be ordering any more after this order.
Still getting 20/25 turning up at Kingskerswell Arch on a Sunday morning for the day ride and now a few more going on for the whole day, in fact they all went on last Sunday up to Mamhead Obelisk.
Some talk on Sunday about that could there be two ‘soft’ rides each month instead of one. Something to consider at the A G M but would need an extra leader coming forward each month to take on the ride. How about YOU offering to do it.
Mike Taylor is leading the points table with a 14 point lead is already preparing his presentation speech as with only about 7 or 8 rides to go until the end of September I don’t think anyone is going to catch him.
Wednesday Evening Rides
Steve main writes;-
Wednesday evenings continue to be supported by a regular group of 5 - 8 riders. We have been blessed by good weather and have had enjoyable rides to a variety of destinations. We have been flexible on occasion and have, by consensus, sometimes gone to a different pub to that listed. We should welcome Frank, a Wednesday night regular who is unable for family and work reasons to join other rides.
There is something special about riding in the evening and in the dark. Regular sightings of fox, badgers, bat and owls are only achieved on evening rides, the temperature is perfect at this time of year and we have had some wonderful sunsets. We only frequent pubs which stock good quality real ale and at least 2 rides a month finish very close to Newton Abbot or Torquay. If you haven’t been out on a Wednesday for a while, give it a go. It’s a brilliant way to break up the working week.”
Well there you are. There’s no Tour de France on the box for another 11 months to stay in for, next Wednesday the Wednesday ride is going to the Railway Inn in Newton Abbot.
Monday Morning Ladies Rides
Need some more of you ladies to turn out on a Monday morning. Only two regulars meeting up at Sainsburys in Newton Abbot.
Give Ursula a ring (01626 355299) to find out where the rides going next week and make the effort to join her and Jackie.
Getting a dozen to 20 meeting up at Torquay Fire Station most weeks for a morning ride to a local café and an all day ride on the first Tuesday of each month.
Had a successful trip down to Quimper in May. 14 of us went and toured round the area, plan to do something similar next year.
We’re also having some special rides on a Tuesday. The other week there was a Birthday ride as 3 members had a birthday that week that’s a good excuse for a party. This week Derek and Ursula laid on a Garden Party for us all and in the next few weeks there’s a SHED Party ride.
Four Special Events are coming up in the next few months
Annual General Meeting at Court Farm, Abbotskerswell on Wednesday 5th October starting at 7.45
This is your chance to tell us what you want in CTC Torbay in the next 12 months and do you want to play a part in leading rides or organising any special events.

Annual Christmas Lunch Sunday 18th December
Being held at Bickley Mill , Stonycombe this year, couldn’t get the date we wanted at the Cockhaven Manor, hence the change of venue.

Special events next year. I’ll be sending round a survey in a few weeks to find out where you want to go in 2012. Please spend the time to give some thought to it, we’re here to organise the events that YOU want so please tell us what you want.
The Highwayman Magazine
At the moment the Highwayman team are not prepared to let us have any copies for casual sales.
Mike, Tony and myself tried to get an arrangement going that 12 copies would be taken to Exminster Golf Club a few days after publication and either Tony or the Tuesday group would pick them up and start selling them. (The money goes to the Highwayman group, we’re just unpaid salesmen).
They would not go along with this and said either take out a postal subscription or collect them from somewhere the other side of Exeter on a Thursday Coffee Pot ride.
I’m at the moment trying to arrange with a member of the Exeter group who goes on their Coffee Pot runs to pick them up for us and take them to the Golf Club for collection.
PBP this year That’s Paignton Brixham ... no sorry Paris-Brest-Paris
3 CTC Torbay members are riding this 1200 km event this year - Rod Pash, Steve Main and Brian Jago.
I’m sure we all wish them all success and could Graham track their progress as in the past and let us know how they are all getting along.

The new Sunday and Wednesday Ride lists are being finalised at the moment and will be sent out in the next few weeks to you all.
Well I think that covers about everything over the next few months, If there are any changes I’ll be emailing you to keep you up to date and in the meantime I hope to see your smiling face at Kerswell Arch or the Fire Station, no sad faces allowed on CTC Torbay rides you know.
